Should Killer receive Unhoook Notifications?

Unhook notifications provide a lot of information, especially if you haven't yet found another Survivor, or are interested in continuously hammering down on a weak link.

The game just tells you: Hey, there's two Survivors over here.

(Yes, the UI would still also show the Unhook Icon go from a Hook to Injured, but that's another discussion about the information provided by the UI tracking Health-states real-time rather than updating only in chase)

Ehm okay, am i crazy or are you asking for an ACTIVE notification for the killer upon an unhook of a survivor instead of simply keeping the icons in the bottom corner in mind?

The latter isn't that hard? Why would you need an additional notification? Most people want less camping not improvements for soft camping?

And how did you go from "additional unhook notification" straight to "anti camping fixes" that have nothing directly to do with this thread?

IMO that's another discussion. You can certainly still go after PH's cages Unhook notifications, especially if you know how the Cage chooses its placement (farthest point away from Killer) to start heading in that direction.

It would also kinda kill late-game for Survivors, as if a Survivor is chased away from a 3-Gen, they get teleported right back into it, which just makes that 3-Gen even easier to patrol, or makes it easier to hyper-tunnel that one Survivor as it's likely that they'll be teleported into a patrol path, overall increasing tunneling efficiency.

The Killer receives a global noise and there's a black bubble centered on the Hook when a Survivor gets unhooked. They get an active notification as it stands. (Unless for whatever reason my mind has completely failed me, that's how I remember being able to circle back to Hook all the time to take advantage of Make Your Choice)

To be honest i can't remember. My last game was in June and it was only 3 rounds and before that las December and I never cared for kills or anything in the last 2 years.

I don't think the unhook notification is necessarily a bad thing. There is the argument that it lets the killer know to circle back around and tunnel the unhooked survivor, but the equally valid counterargument is that it tells the killer to circle back around and chase the unhooker instead.

More pressing than that, though, I think it's worth mentioning that if we did decide the unhook notification made it too easy to tunnel, it can't just be removed. It'd have to be very carefully adjusted with compensatory changes elsewhere so as to not just deprive killers of relevant information while they're going about fair and above-board games. It's a little too entrenched in how the game operates to be a fair change on its own.

The exact location of two Survivors and the exact moment that they are ontop of each other exactly when one of them is in a vulnerable state is far from "a little bit" of information.

It would be nice if The Killer received Whispers for a duration after a Survivor is Hooked though (maybe with a smaller radius?), gives you an excuse to walk around, and since it triggers off of the Survivor on Hook, can't really be used unless you move away.

Yes the unhook notification should be there. You have 60 seconds to unhook, you have time to wait for the killer to be busy before unhooking.

like Peanuts said its important for the killer to get a notification so he can tunnel, cant make it harder on the killer

Genuine question then, why do solo survivors not know what their teammates are doing by default then, so they know when to go for a rescue or when to commit to their gen. As it is now, you kinda have to make a guess and making mistakes costs a lot more for solo survivors.

Not trying to be antagonistic, I simply started playing in August and it's really weird to me how this role requires communication, co-operation and co-ordination but the tools for those things are either limited to bringing certain aura reading perks or playing with SWF. And still in the first case you cannot do any planning as there is no chat during the game.

Outside of a 4% or Deliverance, a 3rd Survivor is always needed once you place a Survivor on Hook and are engaged with another Survivor on the map. (So removing the notification does remove some disinformation possibilities for Survivor against the Killer).

With regards to generator efficiency, a notification just tells you how long it took survivors to get to the Hook after you left it (you will either get an Unhook notification, or a generator will pop). And it's usually a safe bet to assume Survivors are trying to be as efficient with their time as possible anyway, staying on gens for a decent amount of time before going for an unhook (2 Gen + 1 Hook + 1 Chase), as otherwise they allow the Killer to circle back around more quickly because of that notification and go for the Injured Survivor (if they have yet to find/chase someone else).

That announcment is not forgotten :) Thanks for the small update. Truth be told, I think that this will be one of the most important updates you are ever going to implement. SoloQ would be revolutionized with this kinda knowledge. Well, I might be jumping the gun here with being overly enthusiastic, but in soloQ you lose massive time every game in one way or another, like when you decide to abandon your gen and go for an unhook, only to meet another survivor there who had the same idea. Collectively this wasted some 40-50s gen time.

Hello, I remember and I'm really looking forward to it as I play solo 99,9%. it was something simply strange for me coming from other PvP games who have more communication options even amongst strangers and I feel DBD currently has taken or is taken power and agency from individual survivors and trying to move towards a more team-based meta as I see it (of course correct me if I'm wrong). So that's why it's even more important that us solo survivors get some means of communication.

  • JustAnotherNewbie
    JustAnotherNewbie Member Posts: 1,941

I don't doubt we will still have mistakes that only solo q players make (like say if I'm on death hook and being tunneled but teammate is too scared to take the focus) but at least then I'll feel like I have more tools to deal with certain stuff. Currently it feels like the tools are there but only if you can SWF, otherwise you're punished which is what makes this so frustrating.

If I also knew what other teammates are bringing and no one is bring a gen perk, I'd bring to cover up for us in case the killer has 3-4 slowdowns. As it is now you don't know what the others are bringing. Or if everyone is bringing gen speed I might bring something I find more fun etc.

Outside of a 4% or Deliverance disinformation play from Survivors, no math needs to be performed if you’re occupied elsewhere (especially in chase). Another Survivor must unhook that Hooked Survivor.

And it’s a safe bet to assume that if you’re not in a chase with another Survivor while a Survivor is hooked, that the other Survivors are still on Gens. As if they rush to unhook and you’re not in chase, it invites tunneling because of that Notification.

Now I will say that there is probably some comfort in knowing that “hey, the survivors were not just pounding away on their objective” as a result of the Hook notification popping, but I’m not sure if there isn’t a better way to assuage game speed fears.

  • Brimp
    Brimp Member Posts: 3,066

This seems like a redundant question... they already know the general location of the hook and can see the status icon go from hooked to injured.

Are you guys for real? Keep the damn info for killers.

With all that crapton of info you survivors want basekit UI added, you shouldnt really screech to remove thatfrom killers.

  • DyingWish92
    DyingWish92 Member Posts: 794

Except at end game. They killer should be allowed to camp or try to protect a kill at the end. Knowing how DBD works the rng will teleport the survivor to a hook right next to an open gate for a free escape.

  • HellDescent
    HellDescent Member Posts: 4,883

So in addition to tracking 4 survivors you also want killer constantly looking at his hud? By that logic survivors shouldn't get a notification when someone's hooked or gen is completed

  • AssortedSorting
    AssortedSorting Member Posts: 1,348

Which is another thing I never quite understood, why do I know that a Survivor healed themselves across the entire map outside of my line of sight?

I mean, yeah, I can use that info to deduce if they’re rushing objectives, staying under hook to heal, or if they’re still preoccupied with deep wounds. Just not sure why I know that.

Do you see me advocating for Survivors to be able to see generators auras basekit like the Killer to alleviate map knowledge skills?

Instead of the loud noise notification it should be the entity whispering "psssst your sacrifice got away."

I feel like this will be most of SoloQ survivors when that update goes through 😂

But all jokes aside, it's really nice to hear that BHVR is still considering the idea.

Where did I single you out, or even respond to any of your posts? Also thats an extremely false equivalence, gens don't move, and there literally are perks that show you gen auras (which again, are stationary around the map.) The only way your comparison would be remotely relevant would be regarding the basement, and even that two places it can spawn on most maps.

Edit: forgot to mention that almost all gens have some type of secondary method of discovery as well, like the flickering lights indoors or the field lite poles on outdoor ones.

  • bm33
    bm33 Member Posts: 8,274

I kinda wish gens walked around the map when survivors weren't working on them. It'd be hilarious to watch a survivor chase after a gen to work on it.

I don't think the info needs to be taken away, but I would love a perk that would make the loud noise/unhook notification delayed by a few seconds or even appear somewhere else on the map. Red herring could be reworked to do that.

It would be just as silly as the snowman event, though I can imagine it being an absolute nightmare from a logistics perspective :)

Would removing unhook notifications for killers have a positive effect on gameplay?

I don't think so and I think it would make killers more likely to camp.

  • Witchubtet
    Witchubtet Member Posts: 642

Removing Information would be a bad thing right? Like Survivors get information when a teammate is hurt, downed, hooked, infected, bear trapped, on death hook, and deep wounded. Removing any of these from Survivor is unnecessary, so removing the one extra information tool from killers is also unnecessary.

That being said I do wish that the loud noise notification wasn’t blocking my view of the survivors. If I’m hoofing it back there because I saw someone heading to the hook, I’d like to see the two survivors healing at the base of it, not the black void of a notification. Or maybe a perk that puts killer instinct on the unhooker? Could play Will with Make Your Choice. Kinda like how Spirit Fury Enduring got snuff with Hubris?

  • AssortedSorting
    AssortedSorting Member Posts: 1,348

    Ah, I misread your sarcasm.

I wasn’t making an equivalence, but working off of you saying the survivor role was difficult with regards to map information.

  • bm33
    bm33 Member Posts: 8,274

Could have Guardian remove the noise notification. Still get to see the unhooker's aura so killer still gets some sort of info.

  • AssortedSorting
    AssortedSorting Member Posts: 1,348

Just remove generators and instead of Powering generators, Survivors need to interact with rifts that periodically spawn across the map or something, don’t need to use the generator models.

  • AssortedSorting
    AssortedSorting Member Posts: 1,348

I wouldn’t equate the Unhook notification to survivors getting notifications of teammates status. The Killer isn’t really on the same team after all, lol.

You can kinda do that with Furtive + Nemesis + MYC, but that’s does take three Perk slots (and the aura is blocked by the bubble too). There probably is room for an Unhooker Aura read Perk, as A Nurse’s Calling technically already allows for reading survivors Auras if they’re sitting under hook when you return. But not sure if reading from a greater distance is a good idea or not.

My sarcasm was that there is a very strong push for more free basekit information for solo queue survivors right now (as the post it was commenting pointed out,) while this topic is about taking away information from killers. The role that already has a lot more mental tracking necessary at any given time. I hope it is now clear as such.

  • Witchubtet
    Witchubtet Member Posts: 642

Agreed on that perk set up, but it could discourage camping if it is has a range determination. Like “if the Unhook is 25 meters from the Killer the Survivor who did the save is revealed through Killer instinct for six/eight/ten seconds.” Of course if the killer is camping it’s hard to deal with. Especially one shots like bubba.

As a double digit fresh player I feel like the notification is something I always have to take into consideration while playing both killer and a survivor as the priority #1. After being unhooked as a survivor it doesn't really feel like there's an alternative to running across the map unless there are 2 survivors with medkits right there since as far as I remember any other scenario just led to me being hooked again within the next minute. Then again when I play Hillbilly or Wraith, since I don't have the perks to keep map pressure, I feel compelled to instantly go there to keep the intense pressure up as long as I'm not in a chase and sometimes even when I'm in a chase but the survivor has good loops (shack into a nearby pallet since I don't have clown of bamboozle to deal with shack)

I can't help but feel like hanging on the hook should be way less punishing and seeing a teammate hang on a hook should be less scary. If you could hang on longer I feel like the feeling of urgency wouldn't be so bad. Everyone seems to be just kamikazing towards hooks quite often or at least more often than it should happen

But I'm a noob in the game itself while mostly just being a DbD content enjoyer so that might just be me

In the thread about giving Killers a tangible mid-game goal that acts as a “checkpoint” akin to generators that isn’t as significant to gamestate as a survivor being removed from the match.
