If you don't balance solely based on stats, Trapper should be reworked

The Trapper is the first killer ever released in Dead by Daylight. At the beginning of the game seven years ago, he was the middle-rounder, never too good or bad. But as more and more patches passed, The Trapper was now considered the weakest killer in the game. His gameplay is slow and requires a long setup time. Unlike The Hag, which can quickly dispatch a web of multiple traps in an area, The Trapper is stuck with two traps in his inventory, and the others spawn at random locations everywhere on the map. Furthermore, with his power being so limited in quantity, it requires Survivors to make mistakes rather than the Trapper outplaying his prey. The last nail in the coffin is that some maps, per their color schemes, such as the Eyrie of Crow, or per their lack of any hiding spots on the ground (small patches of grass for example) like The Game are extremely difficult to play on as The Trapper.

I would highly recommend reworking the character. He's a product of his time, and his kit has been barely touched for years now. I would recommend having all traps in his inventory at the start of the match instead of having to pick them up in a corner or on the edges of a map. I'm sure I am not the first to talk about such a rework on The Trapper, but nothing has changed in recent years. If you are not balancing solely on numbers, then The Trapper needs a rework. He is a product of his time and desperately needs to be redone.

    Rework no, slight changes yes.

As the devs themselves pointed out in the Reddit AMA, there's a lot of value in Trapper remaining as simple and straightforward as he currently is, because he's the very first killer players have in their roster when they get the game and he's easy to pick up, mechanically speaking. Plus, there's something to be said for keeping him the way he is just as a preservation of history- though to be fair he has been changed noticeably a few times.

He definitely shouldn't get all his traps on him at the start of the match, that's a massively bad idea, but there's plenty that can be done to help him out while retaining his current identity and feel. A big one would be adjusting where his traps spawn at the start of a match, so he doesn't have to go all the way to the other side of the map to get all of his power, but they could also look at things like setting speed, trap colouration, basekit punishment for stepping in a trap while injured...

We do know he's getting a small update, at least. So, at least some of these things could be addressed sometime soonish.

A big reason why they want keep trapper identity in picking up traps is that they want to keep his emotional connection of being a hunter that setup traps. I think that is reason why they are not giving 8 traps in his inventory automatically. It take away the whole like RPG aspect of playing trapper away so I can see why they would not change that.

one aspect of trapper that could be improved is how he has to bow down and sit +2 seconds to setup a trap. that is way too slow in my opinion for killer gameplay. he should be able to throw traps in front of him similar to Artist birds and they could be armed in few seconds. he would have a lot more potencial use to his power at loops as he could throw traps behind or in front of him as you turn corners as he is chasing.

I think they want trapper traps to spawn everywhere because it gives that realism that his traps are all over place and he is collecting them to lure his pray. there is certain beauty to trapper aesthetic in his gameplay that feels nice even though it is a bit superficial.

You both have good points. The change I proposed was only one of many solutions available. The point was more about changing or adjusting the killer in any way. It's pretty much a desperate cry after losing yet another game with my first main in this game. I moved to other killers since, which is sad. I like my boy trapper.

You mentioned the devs adressing trapper recently; where can I find that information?

This was a part of the Reddit AMA session, where the topic of giving Trapper an overhaul came up. They answered that they wanted to keep him mostly where he is, citing both his statistics and that simple characters that are easy to pick up and learn are valuable for onboarding new players, but said that he'd have a small killer update planned to release alongside the Naughty Bear skin.

Trapper is a horrible 1st killer honestly. Sure he isn't technically complex but you need a massive amount of map knowledge to actually use him effectively. Wraith is significantly better 1st killer. So that argument is kinda terrible honestly.

its so stupid too, if they just made trapper bag basekit and some other addons he'd be A-tier. Such a product of his time, as of now hes practically designed to fail. imagine if for every triggered trap, hag had to walk over there, pick it up, and move it where she wants.

I'm not sure I'm following your point, sorry.

He is the first killer. We can't go back in time and make it Wraith. Unless you're referring to him being the onboarding killer for new players, in which case... nah, I disagree. Wraith is stronger, but you don't need strength for an onboarding killer, you need simplicity and lack of insane mechanical requirements. I'm not saying Wraith doesn't fit those criteria, but Trapper fits them more.

Nothing forces a player to not immediately buy a DLC and start playing someone else, but if they do start with the killer on the box art, the killer in the tutorial, and the killer that is listed first in their roster, they get a simple killer with an understandable power that pushes them to learn not only map awareness but also M1 chase fundamentals too. I think Trapper is a good first pick.

What else is more simple then wraith's kit? I'd 100% say trapper is a worse onboarding killer because I played wraith first then switched to trapper and wondered where would good places to place my trap were and did significantly worse because i was just walking around placing traps not actually chasing survivors.
