Why do selfish and toxic people struggle with teamwork?

I know I'm not the only one who noticed that selfish survivor players who are also toxic tend to struggle to recognize the failings of their team or themselves.

Instead they blame the killer because it's only one person and it's easier than getting the issue figured out within the team or themselves. That being said what else would it be to this issue of toxic players?

Gotta be real, people like this exist in every game.

In a game where you have teammates, someone will blame them for everything that goes wrong.

In a game where you have an enemy player, someone will blame them for being cheap or abusing OP mechanics.

It's just people protecting their ego. Toxicity comes in when their ego is damaged.

Being toxic after winning, though, is ironically just loser behaviour.

Just people being themselfs (or in this case some with this behavior), the problem shows when you need work togeather as team to achieve some goal and get teammate like this sandbaging selfish rick than its not fun.

Lol it's just the mindset of toxic win at all costs players. When they do lose it can't possibly be their fault, always someone else to blame.

I saw a great example of this with a streamer recently. Had a ttv survivor in one of my 2v8 killer games. I was playing with a rando spirit, who was, I'm not going to lie, pretty bad, at one point they had got 4 hooks to my 12, and one of those was my down that i let her pick up. The ttv and their swf were an enthusiastic flashlight squad. Spent most of the game bullying the spirit. When i saw spirit lose a down to a flash I'd wander over and help, chase of the flashies, and help pincer for easy downs. We got a 7k and streamer was first to die.

Now when I see a ttv i usually jump im their stream after a game to offer ggs, and chat about how the game went. Even after very intense games I find the response is usually positive or at least a strained politeness. But damn this streamer was MAD. They cussed me out a lot and talked loads of smack about the spirit. Apparently I was reported for "tag teaming" since according to this streamer, in 2v8 teaming 2 killers up against a survivor in chase is worse than tunneling and against the rules. Which kinda confused me since the shadow class i was using, is explicitly intended to lurk near the other killer and help secure downs.

I got on with my day, but that's the mentaility of an awful lot of players

One issue i see in DBD is, as survivor, there is a "culture" and a mindset that its you against the killer. This is the common view of survivor in this game. People think they should be able to 1v1 the killer and still get out. Its how i understand why there is so much hate and toxicity. Its a horror movie where everyone wants to be the final girl.

The design for survivor is 4 people cooperating. You need your teammates to play, you should play with a team mindset, not a 1v1 mindset.

If people start to change this mindset i believe we could have a better environment for gameplay.

To your first point, DBD is not really built like a typical team game. It expects you to operate like one and punishes you pretty harshly for failing that objective, which is a major component as to why so many trials feel helpless when you're solo. But at the end of the day, the game judges you solely based on your own performance. That creates a scenario where you have to perform for the benefit of others and not yourself for essentially nothing other than the goodness of your heart.

To your second point, I'm gonna be frank, that is a bad excuse. Another major component of why trials feel helpless is that fact that Killer has only gotten stronger over time and is an overly oppressive force to go against for your average solo. Hell, even SWFs are struggling. 2v8 isn't always so pretty either. Blaming players for being fatigued by a system that punishes them and hands them unfair losses even if they play correctly while offering them very little in return is avoidant of the larger problem. It's not just you though—this point has been mirrored for years, even when Survivor was in a worse spot than they are now.

That 2nd part goes for both roles for the feeling of fatigue it's not exclusive to survivors. With a game with 10 years under its belt people are going to end up tired of it or using the best stuff.

Killer powers have gotten stronger but perks for them have been grounded up and pushed away. Where as the survivor perks have gotten stronger for less skilled individuals. While letting them having less then (and/or) absolute zero reasons to actually interact with the killers.

This is true in all honesty, way to many people trying to play "final showdown" when they should try to play as an actual team of 4 with or without voice chats or parties. These players also lack self awareness of their own actions and reactions.

Fatigue is definitely strong. I disagree with the last point though. New Survivor perks are a snooze fest and useful older perks keep getting sniped, while new Killers continue to be packaged with strong powers (at least initally) and viable perks. But I will say perk variety has always been an issue for the game overall. It's just getting worse.

Personal responsibility is not popular, if we're talking about blaming teammates or opponenents.

If we're talking about BMing, a lot of players are burnt out and angry.

Can't remember the last survivor perk that interested me, and my beloved Streetwise was reworked into uselessness. Meanwhile I've seen Turn Back the Clock in half my survivor matches, and I've been using Secret Project constantly in my killer ones.

But there are perks for both roles that require you to do absolutely nothing to get value from them.
