Crosshairs - A ranty post about my biggest small annoyance
After a near miss on a recent axe throw, I've been grumbling to myself about the lack of crosshairs in this game. While, after many hours, you can learn to eyeball where you are aiming based your animations/models, not only does this become unreliable with different skins (Slinger), it's an unreasonable ask for a player to intuitively know how to line up properly. Not to mention it's needless extra mental load even on a relatively experienced player.
I know this topic has come up before, and there has been a few points on either side. I just wanna throw it back out there as to why I see this as a quality-of-life improvement, and not a direct buff. Most people are either ambivilent or pro in-game crosshairs, but I wanted to put out some of the general concerns people might have regarding such a change and try and push back. Please observe me debate these real men that I didn't conspicuously stuff with straw before writing this post:
"I don't want to undermine the immersion/artstyle of the game with a non-diagetic crosshair."
The Dev's reasoning - understandable! But the game has long since strayed from the full immersion factor, especially in the killer role. Trickster has level up sounds with a unique HUD blaring constantly, Snug creates a glitter trail for Portia to sprint along, Jason (from the killer perspective) turns into a car every 12 seconds, and most in game information is portrayed through on-screen icons. None of this is immersive, so why the line at a crosshair?
"I still won't like how it'd look."
This is why I think it should be a toggle available on all killers and survivors.
"This will unfairly buff ranged killers."
Generally, most ranged killers aren't super high up the tierlists with one hockey-masked exception, and he gets a pretty reliable alignment baked into his animation. Plus, you are likely facing people with third-party crosshairs every so often, and there are many that do so publicly and don't crush every game nor make the killers they play look overpowered. Given that you can use third-party software, a bit of tape, your monitor/TVs proprietary software to gain a crosshair, or just learn the alignments, having one baked into the game proper would be quality of life, not a buff.
"You just said it yourself, you can use third-party means to get a crosshair."
Yes, I can. I'm on PC. But I shouldn't need extra software or a monitor with specific features to achieve this. My monitor can't do this and I don't use third-party software at all for fear of an EAC update flagging it, even if it's just a crosshair overlay. And let's not forget the brave souls that choose to play projectile on console. Why let them languish with an innate disadvantage?
"Killers have addons for that."
They shouldn't. It's stupid that they do. And I'm not proposing we baskekit addons that preview trajectory such as the Help Wanted Ad for Springtrap. Those browns can stay as they're a handy learning tool for people learning some of the awkward projectile drop off present in this game. However, pure crosshair addons like Memento Blades on Trickster should be completely revamped into something actually useful.
"Why a crosshair toggle on survivors too?"
Flashlight saves. Can't tell you the amount of blinds I've missed/seen missed on me because the starting angle was off, throwing the timing out. Also, wouldn't you want to throw a pinpoint accurate pebble? Could make the difference between a 4E and a 4K fr.
"I feel it takes DBD further away from its original intentions and I'm already opposed to the things in game that do that already."
I can sympathise with this one and I do not have an argument against it. This is just a subjective difference of opinion and you are entitled to it. Please keep in mind I want this to be a toggle though.

sucks being a console player sometimes...I genuinely don't understand why bhvr wastes an addon slot on trickster to give them a crosshairs they know people want and need rather than give them a setting so they don't need 3rd party programs

The number one reason I think it should be added is because, as you said, some people already have it. Even my TV has a customizable cross hair option. There's no reson they should let so many people have something others don't when it's fairly easy to add in and yeah, is already available as an add-on for many killers, so is clearly not a problem.
