The Pro's and Con's of a Battle Pass
Pros
- Cosmetics Only: This is good because it keeps the game from being Pay to Win (for now)
- Offers a Free section: The content of this free section I will get into later, but in general, it is a pro to at least have one.
- Encourages you to play: Since it requires you to advance through the archives, it encourages people to play new roles and killers and try new perks and strategies
- Cheaper than expected: It is only $10 (1000 auric cells), which at least for me is cheaper than I expected.
- You eventually get your money back: Over the course of grinding through a tome, you will eventually get all or most of your auric cells back. However, this is basically the equivalent of store credit, which is fine, but not the equivalent of recompense.
Cons
- Adds to the insane price of this game: While yes, this is technically a completely optional part of the game, it nonetheless adds to the insane price that devoted players must pay for. In order to buy the game and all chapters, it would cost $93. While this is all optional content, the game will get very boring very quickly with only 4 killers and 5 survivors. I don't particularly like the "You don't have to pay for it" argument, as it ignores the sociological theory of the fear of missing out (FOMO) where people are pressured to do something because their peers or people they look up to (content creators) are doing the same thing. Personally, I don't think it's right to take advantage of this to pressure people into buying something.
- Charms are a boing reward.: If I'm gonna put tons of time into grinding and maybe even paying the $10, I'd want something more rewarding then small little key chains which no one will notice or care about.
- Free Pass is lackluster: As of right now, the type and amount of rewards you get for the free pass is barely worth grinding for. This further adds to the pressure put onto players to buy the premium pass.
In Summary
Overall, I think this battle pass CAN work if given the right tweaks. Here are just a few suggestions to make it better:
- Better Prizes
- More and/or higher quality prizes in the free pass
- Make charms more than just keychains.
- Allow you to advance in tiers with both auric cells and iridescent shards
- (LONGSHOT) Make older chapters free, put all chapters (except licensed) at a lower price, or make the game free to play. Of course this is unlikely to happen, but it would be nice to gain some leniency on how much we have to pay. Especially for new players where the price will be extremely overwhelming.
I know some people really hate the battle pass, I know some love it. I don't think it's inherently bad, but it must be done right. I think BHVR has done a pretty good job so far with not making it pay to win and making it only $10. However, I think more work still needs to be done to make it fair and reasonable for players, and profitable for BHVR. This was my attempt to analyze the pros and cons of the battle pass, how it can be improved, and my overall opinion of it. I can tell some people will already hate on my for "blindly hating" the battle pass or "supporting Fortnite" or whatever, but I genuinely think this COULD work.

The premium track has 1000 auric cells in rewards across the whole thing so it's a one time buy for active players since it can be used to purchase the next battlepass without paying anything.
The game has a lot of DLC but the DLC goes on sale fairly frequently. $93 for a game and three years worth of DLC is a pretty good deal TBH. A lot of AAA games have way more for the game + 1 years worth of DLC much less 3.
The game has 5 free killers: billy, wraith, trapper, nurse and huntress; and 7 free survivors: David, Dwight, Meg, Claud, jake, nea and bill. Console version has more but is also more expensive so I can't really speak for the price/content there.
The game has plenty of base content. Most of the meta survivor perks are free and there are quite a few good free killer perks as well as two of the best killers. You only need 2-4 DLCs to get the rest of the meta perks you might want (like laurie for DS + bubba for bbq + hag for ruin) and you pretty much have the stuff that many people use game after game without swapping out. Additionally all the maps are free.
Also when it comes to FOMO I don't really think its a problem. In fact I think the battlepass reduces FOMO way more than it causes it. The battlepass allows you to get a load of cosmetics for a relatively low price + there are a lot of iri shard cosmetics in the game. FOMO when it comes to cosmetics is way less of a problem when theres a significant number of cosmetics that can be gotten for free. And when it comes to actually completing the battlepass, everyone can use the archives so that isn't really a problem. I also imagine once the rift closes the old cosmetics will be added to the store where some of them will become available for shards.

It does pay itself back, which is good. But we shall wait and see how long it will take to pay itself back.
idk about you, but most games I play don't have 13 different DLC's, most have anywehre between 1 and 4 expansions or addons that cost the same price as a chapter. And in online games, much of the "DLC" is cosmetics, which I didn't mention at all. I just don't like the insane price I have to put into the game and will have to continue to put into the game. Especially for new players who thought the game was $20

You can pretty safely not buy a lot of those chapters without missing much. Especially on the survivor side. The vast majority of the survivors have terrible perks that are a waste of bloodweb space. A good chunk of the killers are also pretty bad but they can have some perks that you might actually want but again 4 or so purchases will likely set you up with all the meta perks you need and you could even make do without those.
