Ranked Mode – Solo/Duo Queue to Preserve Balance and Immersion

Introduction

Dead by Daylight urgently needs a Ranked Mode to address current matchmaking and balance frustrations. Recently, content creator MomoSeventh discussed the need for competitive play and proposed a 5v5 mode with in-game mic chat, reflecting his experience with DBD League. While his points about the necessity of ranked play are valid, the 5v5 format with forced voice communication is not ideal for the core Dead by Daylight experience.

Building on this, I propose a solo/duo queue ranked mode that balances competitive integrity, immersion, and accessibility — aligning with how other successful competitive games approach ranked play.

🎯 Proposed Ranked Mode Features

  • Solo or duo queue only (no full 4-player SWF groups allowed in ranked)
  • No forced in-game voice chat to maintain horror atmosphere
  • Quick Play remains the casual mode for full SWF parties, friends, and Archives
  • Leaderboards for killers and survivors:
    • Killers ranked individually, top 500 leaderboard listing players’ highest-ranked killers and top 3 played killers
    • Survivors similarly tracked with their top 3 survivors shown for personality and skill representation

Benefits of Solo/Duo Queue Ranked

  • Preserves the immersive horror experience — no forced mic play or full team coordination
  • Easier and more realistic to balance compared to full 4-player teams
  • Provides developers with clear, reliable data for balancing killers, survivors, perks, and items
  • Separates competitive solo/duo players from full SWFs, reducing toxicity and frustration
  • Creates a dedicated competitive environment without forcing all players into sweaty, unbalanced matches
  • Allows players to practice new killers or try Archives without disrupting ranked integrity
  • Reduces “win streak” obsession and matchmaking abuse seen in current Quick Play
  • Gives players meaningful in-game goals and progression beyond external leaderboards

⚠️ Queue Dodge Prevention

Duos might try to “snipe” other duos or dodge queues to force 4-man SWF matches, as seen in other games. To prevent this, a dodge timer or penalty should be introduced, maintaining matchmaking fairness and discouraging exploitative behavior.

📌 Why Not 5v5 or Full Team Ranked?

  • 5v5 modes with voice comms push DBD toward a tactical shooter style rather than a horror game
  • Competitive games like League of Legends and Overwatch 2 successfully run ranked solo/duo queues without voice comms
  • Full team leaderboards would prioritize team familiarity over individual skill, which is unfair for solo players
  • Team-based ranked systems belong in custom games or separate leagues, not the core public matchmaking pool

📌 Summary

MomoSeventh highlighted the urgent need for Ranked Mode in Dead by Daylight, but his 5v5 proposal with in-game mic chat isn’t suitable for DBD’s core gameplay and community. A solo/duo ranked queue is a balanced, tested solution that keeps the game’s immersion intact while creating a fair and competitive environment. It also provides clearer balance data, reduces toxicity, and offers players meaningful progression.

Bumping as this must be seen and considered ASAP due to the implementation time.

Where do three-mans fit into this? They'd get a solo player with them, and are more numerous than quads anyway.

Solo/Duo only. 3 man can play quick play. Same as League of Legends, Overwatch 2, most other competitive games.

Surely if a ranked mode would be implemented, that would be where you'd expect to see 4-man squads more often?

That's the far more competitive way of playing DBD. The horror atmosphere already wouldn't matter for ranked mode, that's self-evidently not why anyone would queue for a ranked mode - they'd be taking it seriously and trying to win, not playing immersed - and I'd personally argue it'd be much more realistically easy to balance if 4-man squads are encouraged instead of disbarred.

For example, in ranked mode you could introduce features that would be tremendously awful for the main game, like restricting loadouts to only one copy of each perk per team, just as an example. That'd balance SWF stacking perks, promote careful thought and strategising prior to a match, and allow the game to play out in a competitive environment where everyone's on the ball and coordinated.

Enforcing solos and duos would just make ranked mode really hard for survivor and noticeably easier for killer on average, surely?

Ranked" and "Casual" Queues cannot exist for one simple reason: they would become meaningless in short order and in the end nothing good would come of it.

DBD has a very aggressive and competitive playerbase which is notorious for exploiting every scrap of edge they can get to make the "other side" miserable (go watch "The Downfall of bully squads" from Ardetha on Youtube, very interesting watch).

If Queues were separate, not only would that make queue time longer but it would also cease to function shortly when good players start going against other players that can match or surpass them on the regular, and what do you think will happen then?

Former "ranked" players, after getting beaten too many times or simply wanting easy stomps, will go to the "casual" queue and start to steamroll people meming around or bringing unoptimal builds, which would make "ranked" queue times even longer which would make even less people play it and so on and so forth until only a handful of comp players remain in the "ranked" queue out of principle and the rest of the playerbase is playing casual queue in order to hope for a game where they don't sweat, returning us to the current situation.

As unbalanced as the game can be, splitting queues won't fix anything, better to work on fixing the bad things instead of further dividing an already split community. Leave rule enforcing to tournaments.

No, it's where 4 man SWFs would WANT to be seen more often. That is who is upvoting your comment. This should not be the case. The game is not and should not be balanced around it. So no. Let them 'be the best of friends and play together!' in quick play.

Hence why only solo/duo queue. It cannot be made miserable. If killers or survivors are still able to make it miserable at the top level, it's a clear indicator of rebalancing.

Stomping on quick play is meaningless because all of your meaning as a player is attached to your rank. Quick play also still has MMR so it would play similar to how it is today but less sweaty - if players want to go and stomp on quick play they are welcome to do so - no one will care or acknowledge it; especially on Twitch - quick play will be of no interest - only ranked play where the matches matter
