Kill Switch update: We have temporarily Kill Switched the Forgotten Ruins Map due to an issue that causes players to become stuck in place. The Map will remain out of rotation until this is resolved.

DBD Needs Comms

When it comes to the balance of DBD a lot of what is made is with the though of soloq people who cannot communicate with each other while people who play together can use a 3rd party software to communicate with each other.

This has led to a massive imbalance as being able to share info as quickly and precisely was not an intended feature of the game and made playing against people like this frustrating as anything the killer did could be relayed to the rest of the squad with no need for a perk or any down sides allowing for more altruistic plays at the right time with little gen time lost for much better gain as well as being able to cut down on time lost due to confusion.

This game was originally a hide and seek horror game so it made sense then to not have comms but now it is much more competitive due to MMR, hiding just not being that great anymore and a generally more competitive atmosphere than it used to.

So I would say that adding comms so that when future balance discussions are had it can be taken into account people are always communicating with each other as an expectation as having essentially two different worlds of balance is not good as people from both worlds are going to pull the balance in two directions.

An example of this is shoulder the burden in a soloq world it is not great as you need to be able to coordinate with your team to a degree to pull it off well while in SWF this perk is broken as it can reduce killer pressure massively and effectively make a killer tunnel backfire drastically.

Then there are the soloq band-aid perks that would not longer be needed like bond, kindred or empathy.

And before you say it there are more people playing SWF 3-4 man than you think is not some small amount a lot of people like to play with there friends and should not be punished but the imbalance cant be ignored either so I think adding comms would be the best compromise. (And if you want data unfortunately behaviour do not give this any more since they first added SWF to the game but from the one data bit they did give and if you have a chance to check profiles they are more common than you think)

(Could just add lights out as the dedicated spooky mode in its place)

They won't add it because they cannot moderate it.

It would make the game much more broken for survivors that already is. And they don't have ways to moderate it.

While I see the logic behind needing to balance with the idea that everyone has a reasonably similar amount of information regardless of if they're playing in solo or with friends, comms aren't the way to get there.

If all you do is add voice comms, functionally speaking very little changes. Some people will be able to communicate with their teammates, most people will not, and the people who can't are unable to do so for reasons completely beyond their own control or preferences.
Voice comms are the last layer of information gain a game adds, not the first. DBD would need a much, much more robust system of communication and information gain that isn't comms before they should be in the conversation.

Something like a ping wheel and slightly better basekit information would go MUCH further than comms ever could.

The difference between SWF and SoloQ is comms, for sure. I’ve said this many times. However, there is a big difference between being in communications with people who are your friends and being in communications with random strangers.

If you just look at the level of toxicity from people on these very forums and you think it’s a good idea that we should be able to talk with one another during the game? That would be a terrible idea. Not to mention that you get paired with people from all over the world apparently (900ms pings) so there’s a good chance that you wouldn’t be able to communicate with half of these people anyway. And the ones that you could communicate with, would just be using the communications to either be annoying or trash talk.

What I actually think would work, is adding some abilities for SoloQ for callouts. Perhaps a drop marker similar to like the beam of light. Red for danger, yellow to mark something you’ve found (ie: a hex totem when you’re about to take chase) and green for where you are currently working. That would put solo Q survivors more on par with SWF, obviously the only thing separating them at this point would be the ability to preset your builds around each other, which that will never happen in SoloQ.

I don't think it would change much in reality, simply because majority of players will turn it off.
I wouldn't play soloQ, if I wanted to with other survivors…

I think soloQ should have more information, but chat/talking is not a good way for DBD in my opinion.
I think best way would be chat wheel with some predefined commands (like Vecna), that's easy to use and would be good enough. Also can't really be abused for toxic reasons, if you give it few seconds cooldown.

They've said many times over the years they have no plans to addi in comms. The reasons they've given are language barriers globally and the availability of things like Discord and the built-in comms most of the consoles already have.

Like others have stated above, I too think they just don't want that moderation nightmare.

First off, this is such a great buff that'd deserve killer compensation.

Secondly, I think comms shouldnt be added without a chatwheel or similiar stuff as weaker alternative to people who dont wanna hear voices. I mean chat messages like "focus generators" and "heal me". Identity V has those and i think you dont need many to get the general gist. Or some ping tools (point at a location/object and highlight it/ show a message.

Obviously we could just gave survivors permanent aura reading of each other. Theoretically, thats the braindead spoonfed version of the result of good comms usage by good players. But that'd require the devs to buff all killers, except pig.

It'd be a nice option, but it would make survivors way more powerful if your teammates have good comms [Clock callouts memorized, calls death spots with deja (deja vu is a must in any team tbh. Knowing what gens need to be done first for the whole team is important), finding teammates without the need for aura perks, etc...]

But how can you comm with randoms using discord? Because the game is pretty much always played cross platform, you can't use your console's VC methods anyway.

If your playing with someone in your region, chances are they're gonna speak the most prominent language in your area. Only region where language barriers could be a problem is EU, since theres so many countries there with alot of different languages. Then again, games nowadays with comm features ask for your preferred language, which typically impacts the queue on who you get as teammates

It's not hard to add, and it would probably be one of the last solo queue buffs ever added, since nothing beats comms in terms of the solo survivor experience getting better.

The ######### do you mean? Yes they can. Every single online multiplayer past the year 2010 can moderate voice comms.

People like you are the reason why this game is constantly falling in quality.

No DBD doesn't need comms. With all the racist, homophobic, mysoginistic players and the toxic player base in general we don't need it. People will turn them off and not speak especially women players.

I know it would make them more powerful and I would expect massive killer buffs to go with it the main goal of it is to bring the balance sphere in to one instead of SWF v Soloq as balancing for the two is going to always fail so for the future of the game I think trying to even out the power as much as possible, even if a 4stack with better chemistry will still do better, just trying to close the gap as I think a ping wheel can only do so much.

Moderation of a chat system is going to be needed its just the defacto expectation with multiplayer games that you will get bad actors and for the first month I would imagine it would be at its worst but over time most of it will settle down as the worst offenders would get banned setting the precedent that it is not tolerable to be toxic on comms.
