Opinions on the state of the Killer role in DBD now?
Hello there DBD community!
I’ve been thinking a lot about the state of killer within the past three months and thought that I would throw my hat into the ring as to what I believe people’s opinions on the state of killer of DBD is like and how I have been viewing it from my lens as a killer main.
To quickly answer the question of whether killer has become more difficult or not; I believe that there has been a pretty intense difficulty spike, for a decent amount of killers. (this will become important to formulate my full opinion later). Ironically enough, I have been closing in on my personal Trapper win streak with 19 wins in a row, but why is that? Why would a killer, especially Trapper be able to perform as efficiently as he has lately? Well, I’m going to pick three of my recent matches and use them to elaborate the points that I have regarding killer difficulty and explains why generally, killer has a much more difficult time overall to get decent killing results.
Exhibit 1A: Trapper 4k on Dead Sands
(Excuse me in advance for my inability to get a half-decent screenshot of my matches, I typing the majority of this on phone and the screenshot looks HUGE on my end).
Now this was a Trapper match I dreaded the moment I saw myself load into it, a sand map with Trapper, the middle decently open with a shack in the center, how the hell did I manage to do it? I managed to win because I learned that Trapper ( and Hag to an extent) bypasses an important part of modern Survivor gameplay; that being tile chaining/pre-running! I knew I could not set up on all of the Dead Sands jungle gyms, so I opted to trap the center killer shack (which had a generator inside), a few jungle gym windows, and most importantly, tiles that bridged between said jungle gyms. What I found is that after a basic attack survivors often did three things while I was chasing them. They would either greed the current jungle gym they were at, use the speed boost to go to a filler, or use the injury boost to hold w to another jungle gym. With the latter two options resulting in a subsequent trap in their leg because they did not expect the setup killer to lock down joining tiles. Me denying the center of the map also meant that the survivors HAD to play more unsafe sections because their theoretical pallet/loop chaining potential went to nil because I maintained the center of the map (killer shack). Which allowed me to inch a win against a pretty strong coordinated team in a already hellish map for most killers. If I were any other killer I would have struggled due to being directly unable to stop survivors in their tracks.
Exhibit 2A: Dead Sands survivors and loadouts for reference:
Exhibit 1B: Dead Sands with Twins
As you can probably tell I do not run the most meta or strong killers/loadouts when playing DBD but here is an excellent example on how an inability to lock down chaining tiles/jungle gyms can really hurt the gameplay of certain killers, take this Twins match for example which took place on the same map as Trapper, both have a capability to set up but Twins is much more limited due to the size of the map and how it is laid out. though there is less information to go off of by stats alone I can say as much that I struggled to even manage two kills, the team utilized resources effectively and due to the nature of the killer and the current survivor meta of quick healing, I lost pressure really quickly during unhooks and the early/mid game. Twins currently is my third most played killer and I know I am not the best Twins player but I know what I am doing enough of the time to pressure a survivor team. I bring this match up as an example because killers that struggle to maneuver a map quickly or bypass being healthy through insta-down, maintaining injury, or other methods (like trappers traps or hag's phantasms) are truly struggling in DBD at the moment, making the average match for the killers that are incapable of doing either or OR both fall considerably behind.
Exhibit 1C: Hag on a stupidly large map, but a build to demonstrate my points.
And here we are, the penultimate game I want to share, I remember this one being an intriguing struggle to win, but I managed to kill three survivors and I let the last one get the hatch. But with this match I am going to relate my earlier points with this match here. Despite me being a 4.4 killer initially I went into this match with the waterlogged shoe addon, increasing my speed significantly paired with Rapid Brutality to keep up with survivors. Though I couldn't go across the map easily with my power now I knew i could set up hindering chokepoints with my addons and force double-back through mind gaming (egg especially helps with feats like this) to make survivors lose distance and the voila! A down. The fact I was so fast coupled with my power to create traps for both information and survivor hinderance allowed me to deny loops that would make most other killers struggle, even insta-down killers. The difficulty came in from the survivors ability to quickly heal within a span of 5-10 seconds during unhooks.
Exhibit 2C: Pale Rose Survivor Loadouts
In Conclusion: Thank you to whoever took the time out of their day to read my ramblings! There are many, many reasons why the modern DBD player will struggle in this game but through these points I have outlined, I hope to help people make more sense as to what might be contributing to their struggles in DBD. As usual, I would like your thoughts, experiences and opinions to see whether they align with mine or hell, you could completely disagree with my sentiment! All in all, thanks for your time and a good rest of your day/night!

Absolutely miserable. Fog Vials really are the straw that broke the camel's back.

Im having the time of my life as killer, so much altruism that it is easy
the queue times finally fast with bp now
-1 -
Better than ever.
If somebody disagree tell me when were the best killer's times?
2 -
Honestly? Until phase 2, pretty good.

Gen kick meta with Overbrine Eruption. Sure, you had to bait Dead Hard, but it was much easier to slow the game down. CoH was a bit of a problem, but it wasn't any worse than the healing meta we have now.

Before this update I think the killer experience was alright.
Not the healthiest / easiest / strongest it had ever been, but generally speaking there wasn't much being stacked against killers recently. That would still be true if this update didn't have a game breaking bug where chases do not start.

Killer players complain constantly about medkits and toolboxes, and then when something else is introduced killers complain about it.
Literally nothing will make y'all happy short of basekit No Mither.9 -
Goomba fallacy.

literally nobody asked for silent hill in a damn bottle.
survivors or killers

gonna admit, Goomba Fallacy is a new one to us. Whats it mean?

From the massive sample size of two whole games….it felt fine.
Fog vials are interesting, I guess. I think there's some kind of consistency issues with them, because I did not have a difficult time tracking people.
Chase bug is absolutely ass, but it's a bug. It will be fixed. Although, we thought it'd be fixed prior to it coming to live, so maybe it's just a feature now. Like kidnap tech.

Neet.
Despite how it sums…a lot… we dont explicitly see how their (rydiafan) comment fits this

Currently I like it. Almost instant que times, x1.5 for BP is also tasty
1 -
Miserable if I'm not playing a killer that can deal with the current fad known as pre-run shift W.

Killer A: I don't like toolboxes
Killer B: I don't like medkits
Killer C: I don't like vials
Rydiafan: Killers hate all survivor items!
I, personally, don't mind toolboxes or medkits. I really hate fog vials.

Way better than before the Update, because now you have good queue times and can actually play Killer without thinking that you waste your time in waiting simulator. Difficulty-wise the same as before, despite people claiming otherwise (because of course they will say Killer is SOOOO hard).
Overall the experience is not that good IMO after the Patch, since for me it is way too buggy. What annoys me the most is the Bug with Stairs. How can you mess up Stairs? Closely followed by the Bug which cuts Chase in a Fog Vial, mainly because this Bug was around back then already when they were in the Halloween Gamemode…

Killers will never be happy short of having permanent aura reading and exposed status on survivors as base kit. Like you're not always gonna get the 4k. Get over it…

It's pretty bad I'm gonna be honest. You play the A to S tier killers and the game can play itself in the average match most of the time. You play anything weaker than that and you will be fighting for your life against drama finesse, sb, 1-4 vigils, strong healing perks, still strong toolboxes/medkits, and strong anti tunnel/anti slug/anti camp.
For added measure throw in every killer that have had multiple game breaking bugs for years. Throw in killers that have been gutted and left to die until they get reworked 999 years later.
The only thing keeping these killers functional is the fact solo queue is still the most miserable experience ever and matchmaking is as wide as clown. Can we finally get some sort of ping system, basekit aura reading, or premade chat prompts?
-1 -
its being dumbed down a lot in really bad ways
idk why bhvr keep forcing inherently more competitive and skill expressive role to be like this, its just sad
if they put even half of this effort into making survivor easier to play&pick up and be weaker in SWFs, so many issues wouldve been resolved or relieved at least partially
4 -
Soooo because they generalized it?
fair enough, though gonna point out that's not what they said.

Been pretty rough for me since mid event, tbh. Kill rate with my main has dropped to 47% and I'm struggling to get more than one or two kills in a Trial. Before that, things were just fine. I'm putting the difference down to an uneven distribution of players, with the Killer queues being so long.
There should be more Survivors returning to the game with this new patch, so hopefully I'll get more suitable match ups soon. Not sure I want to jump back into such a bug ridden patch just yet, though. I'll maybe wait for BHVR to hotfix the chase bug that prevents you from starting a chase (played a game against bots on my Switch last night and encountered this bug).
Besides, my PC is still downloading the update and I will only play Killer on PC these days because cross progression ruined Killer on Switch for me.

"intense difficulty spike"..."19 win streak with trapper"
this is so pretentious. you're playing easy mode. then you have the audacity to complain about how much of a "struggle " killer is while utterly steamrolling the opponent. this is the perfect encapsulation of killer main entitlement. blowing things way out of proportion at the slightest sign of resistance from the opposition.

you missed the point of the post. The OP is saying that they got a win streak of 19 as trapper because they deconstructed how survivors played. They noticed survivors like to chain between tiles by using filler tiles (or shack on dead sands) or holding W and they exploited this to prevent survivors from getting to their intended location. They are arguing that many killers (unlike trapper) don't have the ability to shut down these chains and this leads them to suffer in chase. They used twins as an example which I disagree with but other than that (besides some obscure tech or setup knowledge) many killers and killer players aren't the best equipped to deal with this.
Hell, I'd argue this is why Ghoul is so strong, he directly counters holding W while preventing you from escaping him when he cuts you off. Ghoul is the best for dealing with this, and this is likely the mentality that keeps him firmly in the rotation (which is detrimental to survivor enjoyment).
They aren't pushing some us vs them narrative, cool your jets.

nope, you've missed the point. describing a 19 win streak as "difficult" is the epitome of cringe.

From the original post:
- 'To quickly answer the question of whether killer has become more difficult or not; I believe that there has been a pretty intense difficulty spike, for a decent amount of killers.'
- 'In conclusion: Thank you to whoever took the time out of their day to read my ramblings! There are many, many reasons why the modern DBD player will struggle in this game but through these points I have outlined, I hope to help people make more sense as to what might be contributing to their struggles in DBD.'
These two sentences literally demonstrate my point. This whole post is a list of reasons a killer may feel the game is more difficult and how they personally have found ways to counter it. Like for instance what I said earlier.
They also make a comment about how certain killers are balanced like twins struggling in the current meta due to fast heals and the general strength of some survivor teams.
- 'I bring this match up as an example because killers that struggle to maneuver a map quickly or bypass being healthy through insta-down, maintaining injury, or other methods (like trappers traps or hag's phantasms) are truly struggling in DBD at the moment'
Once again demonstrating my point that they used Trapper to bypass the current survivor meta. And the fact you misinterpret what they say as them describing the trapper killstreak as difficult, despite the fact that they used the killstreak as an example of how to circumvent the current meta just shows that you saw the words 'killer' 'difficult' and saw red.
And I'm stuck here wondering how my skills I learned in high school English 3 years ago are still intact.
