Shin Megami Tensei: The Pros, Cons and Challenges

shin-megami-tensei-1-review-and-thoughts-v0-hy2ub5iwg3mb1.jpg

Of all the potential properties that could come into Dead by Daylight, Shin Megami Tensei is one of the largest lesser-known IPs that would thematically fit into the world of The Fog. It is a series of monster tamer turn-based role-playing games where you play as a (mainly) late teen/early adult who happens to find themselves caught within a post-apocalyptic crisis where humanity is on its metaphorical knees by the hands of demons. The PC must learn to hone their ability to recruit demons they fight, survive in a hostile world where gods and demons will kill you and have your ideals be the one that decides the path of the world after the old world order has faded. The series is known for and beloved by its fans for the dark and desolate atmosphere inspired by the likes of the Devilman anime. It is an atmosphere that explores the nuances of humanity and how the best choices are determined by the player's own autonomy, showcased in the multiple endings the games make as their signature philosophical hook.

With the background of the series out of the way, the question that burns would be "Why should this IP be considered for a potential Chapter in Dead by Daylight over so many other potential IPs?" For one, the gray and bleak atmosphere and morality crafted within the series surprisingly fits in very well with the lore of DBD; the games often deal with themes of survival, the fear of death and the lengths humans will go to live even if it means betraying others. Due to the nature of the game, there is not only a lot of ease with finding potential Survivors and Killers, but the game mechanics would be able to inspire a lot of ideas for Killer Powers, Perks and potentially even a Map that takes place in a post-apocalyptic urban setting. The potential for cosmetics and Legendary Skins is also very high too as the games do have a certain style that would fit in line with licensed cosmetics present in the game.

...and now the challenges for this property. For one, it's not really a requested or mainstream popular property. Even with its legacy and growth, Shin Megami Tensei remains a niche IP. Another con against it that necessarily is not the fault of the IP is that the series takes place mainly in Tokyo. With there being a high proliferation of Japanese-styled content in DBD both original and licensed, it would be possible for fatigue to set in over another Japanese-centric IP when there are many other places The Fog can go to such as the Sub-Sahara, Middle-East, Eastern Europe for Original Chapters or try to get licenses for other highly-requested IPs in the realm of Horrors, Slashers and Fantasy. This one is perhaps the biggest hurdle that not even having the manifestation of humanity's fear of death represented by horrifically terrifying skeletons as Killers would be able to sway the opinion away from.

Despite these cons and challenges, I do think that Shin Megami Tensei would make for an amazing chapter with fascinating lore that could tie into DbD's narrative like how DbD became tied into the lore of Dungeons & Dragons. I do acknowledge it's a longshot of a longshot, but it could be fun to imagine what this IP could bring to DbD

if you play p3p as a girl, the male Attendant will be very uncomfortable about you handling him

Satan is still on the table, seeing as we have Hagboob

Playing p3p as a girl is very uncomfortable in general, and not because you play as a girl. Some of those social links are… not good.

I thought they were an upgrade imo, since you have to actually try to make straight men find straight men appealing(the gourmet king was the worst link I've ever suffered)

You're forgetting about some particularly problematic ones, but that rabbit hole is getting a bit off topic.

SMT in general is an interesting pool though, since there have been so many spinoffs (including but beside persona.) Games like the Devil Survivor series would make for an interesting pool of survivors especially.

    I kinda did...oops..

I wonder if this chapter would work best as a survivor standalone or a store collection? does Smt have notable personalities for the bad guys? Persona has Hitler, who is a certified jerk and not nice guy. Are all the bad guys just demons?

Many of them are human agents, like Strega in P3, so there could be plenty of humans to work with. But since many of the personas/monsters/etc are based on various myths and religions directly or partially, it could be a pretty tricky pool to navigate. Even getting past the religious ones, there's a recurring shadow thats literally just Hulk Hogan. Like, not even trying to hide it.

It could work, but they'd have to lean more into the OC and/or generic ones to avoid potentially being offensive, so it shrinks the choices quite a bit, and those options might end up a little too limiting if they can't find ones that people would be hype for.

The only major recurring "antagonist" would be Lucifer. Antagonist in quotes because you can side with him in several of the games and he's not explicitly the "evil" one. SMT's all about law vs chaos. His personality and beliefs vary from game to game but he's always chaos aligned.

Honestly there is more than enough choices for a Killer. Anyone who played SMT Nocturne would know that The Fiends would make for excellent Killer material by themselves. Thematically, they're perfect for it considering how they represent the fear of death through biblical proportions which is just metal in general. The biggest problem with that however would be that there are so many Fiends that choosing which base fiend to make a Killer power around is difficult in itself. Matador is definitely iconic as he is the one demon from the game that shows just how deadly the Fiends and the rest of the game will be if the player doesn't take it seriously. But I don't think basing a Killer Power around Red Capote would be anything interesting and would lead to him being another Dash Killer.

A Mara Charm would be absolutely amazing to see in DbD though

I like the SMT series, and while there are lots of things that would fit, I don't think anything stands out or defines the series, say the same way Leon or Wesker stand out about Resident Evil or Pyramid Head from Silent Hill. That is what I think would make it harder for BHVR to pitch a SMT chapter (unless we're just talking cosmetics).

So there is no overarching plot in the Shin Megami Tensei games (outside of 1 and 2), but there are recurring themes between them:

●Humanity's vices bring forth demons, thus triggering an apocalyptic event caused by nuclear fallout to a ritual to restart and recreate the world to even the death of God.

●Protagonist is someone who is caught up with the powers of the world and eventually has to choose their ideal over the course of the game to determine the outcome of the world and humanity.

●Along the way, your allies become enemies if you side against them, you will die as often as you will to enemy encounters in Dark Souls and will be stressed out not knowing whether or not a demon will ambush you.

That is basically the stories of the games in a nutshell. There is very fascinating lore tidbits in the series that connects the games to a grander-scale multiverse, but the games themselves are (mostly) self-contained and you can play any of the games in the series without needing to play any others. Nocturne and Vengeance are the most accessible games if you have an interest in the series and I do give my recommendation to play them.

...thinking about it, I think a really good potential Killer would be Mother Harlot https://megamitensei.fandom.com/wiki/Mother_Harlot

Thematically, Mother Harlot is based off the Babylonian ######### in the Book of Revelations of the Bible as one of the great evils who plague the world during the End Times. It is stated that her goblet holds all of humanity's filth that she drinks from and rides on the back of the Seven-Headed Beast (as shown in the link). In a few of the games, she's either the strongest of the Fiends or is among the strongest of them which does give her presence.

Visually, she has an amazing design for a Killer; Mother Harlot sports an opulent style that evokes the image of the ######### of Babylon while her skull-head showcases how she is a being of death and agony. On top of that, the Beast of Revelations can be implemented in her Mori as well as in the lobby screens, so there is something there that'd definitely be popular among players in aesthetics.

Gameplay wise, her signature moves Babylon Goblet and Death Lust do have potential to create an interesting kit since in the games they inflict Panic and Charm respectively. There are probably multiple ways one can interpret how this can be translated into DbD. Perhaps Death Lust can be used to infect Survivors with Oblivious and then Babylon Goblet after hitting an Oblivious Survivor twice inverts that Survivor's controls and enables her Special Attacks to deal damage for 20 seconds? Something interesting there I feel.

Nyarlathotep has multiple forms based on who has him but he is in SMT2 and Persona 2 in both the versions. (There is like 7 versions of him)
